Introduction

BackgroundMy training facility is completely flexible – it can be using your aircraft or one provided by Skyhawk Aerobatics. Unlike Fixed Base Training organisations, the service is delivered at your doorstep. This makes it popular because you can stay in local areas and remain in a familiar environment. When training is undertaken with aircraft supplied by Skyhawk Aerobatics – then the ‘weapon of choice’ is the Extra 300/L. This is currently the only production two-seater certified to international standards, for unlimited performance aerobatic aircraft. It has an established reputation as a user friendly, high integrity flying machine that is easy to operate and a pleasure to fly. It is just as demanding for pilots new to aerobatics because of its extremely responsive controls and a continuing pleasure for more experienced individuals as it allows ‘unlimited’ exploration with total security. Whatever the entry level, the Extra delivers the promise without fail. I did all my learning the 'hard' way - in fact there is really no short cut in this game other than try it and see. Fortunately I was surrounded by experts at an early age who never failed to impress with their airmanship and handling skills. Eventually I was offered the opportunity in my late twenties to turn professional. Starting with a three-month contract touring France with a Ford sponsored Road Show that developed nicely into a three-year commitment all round Europe and Scandinavia using a Pitts S1. Together with Brendan O'Brien we formed a unique display act billed as an aerial ballet using the delightful Fournier RF4 motor glider. This is where the brand Skyhawks was born and developed a three ship display with a music soundtrack and specially designed wing tip smoke generators. After an interlude in the commercial finance world I joined up with Brian Lecomber and the Firebird Aerobatic Team. Using the brand new composite monoplane from Extra we delivered one of the most popular Duo display acts culminating in the award winning Microlease Aerobatic Team with the enhanced version called the 300/L. Brian also pioneered the use of specially designed solid state video systems that allowed us to capture and pass on real-time images taken from on-board mounted digital video cameras. Some of my activity uses aircraft with second and third generation camera systems that have proved to be an invaluable teaching aid as well as providing spectacular on-board footage. As an evolving technology, Skyhawk Aerobatics continues to develop better
camera systems utilising the latest technical developments such as High
Definition Video. |
