Skyhawk Extra 300

The Skyhawk Extra 300LThe 300/L is a derivative monoplane using a composite of materials to achieve maximum strength for the minimum weight. Unlike competitor high performance aerobatic machines the design criteria opted to combine the classic tubular steel rigidity of the fuselage frame with all flying surfaces moulded from epoxy resin on to carbon fibre spars.

The fuselage tub extends from the firewall to the tail as a one piece moulding from kevlar similar to the technique used in the construction of racing cars.

The wing is moulded in two halves bonded together with the rib/spacers creating the void using timber. The aerodynamic section looks deceptively simple. A semi-circular leading edge tapering to the tip and then flat from the main spar across the chord to the trailing edge. Virtually symmetrical throughout the span and zero incidence means the Extra relies on pilot induced alpha to achieve flight.

The Skyhawk Extra 300LPower comes from an aerobatic Lycoming IO-540 rated at 300hp at 2700 rpm. A 6-cylinder arrangement ensures a smooth ride with thrust provided through a remarkably tractable MT propellor. I prefer the three-blade version as it provides slightly better acceleration at slow speeds.

Excellent ergonomically designed seats front and rear gives firm support and total body security, courtesy of the standard five-piece Hooker Harness, employing ratchet tightening.

The canopy is a masterpiece of optically clear moulded Perspex and allows unemcumbered all round vision. The original Extra 300 had a shoulder-mounted wing and meant you had to guess the correct landing attitude. The /L suffix denotes the Low Wing version that has now become the standard production variant – allowing much better landing and taxi visibility.
